“AAK helped me get better opportunities in my life”

Ryan Samani

Laboratory technician, AAK, Louiseville, Kentucky, US

Ryan was working as an engineer in Iran, but he was always convinced he could find more opportunities and live a different kind of life. His determination took him to the US, where he began working in AAK’s facility in Louisville. After a series of roles, he now works as a laboratory technician while studying for a Master’s in Chemical Engineering.

Why did you join AAK?

As I established myself in Louisville, my focus shifted towards uncovering job opportunities that aligned with my educational background and professional expertise. A friend of mine recommended that I explore job opportunities at AAK. While initially, I encountered a position that didn't perfectly match my field, I was drawn to it due to the company's esteemed reputation and promising avenues for future career growth. Motivated by these factors, I embraced the opportunity, joined the company, and embarked on my journey here. This is how I decided to move and make a new start working at AAK.

What was your first role?

I started as a filler in May 2018. After four months I applied for a position in quality assurance. My role, in the beginning, was to check the quality of the oil and the facility equipment. In September 2019 I moved on to a lab position. I had experience working in a mining lab before. After joining the quality team, I got a lot of training, and I learned a lot.

Was it hard to come to such a different country?

I had traveled to other countries before coming to the US, like Turkey and Armenia. The culture of the United States is completely different from Iran. But it's not so hard for me because I always try to adapt to the situation. The first month was a little difficult, but after that, I was okay. No problem!

What were you attracted to at AAK?

For me, it was amazing to start working at AAK. It is a big company with lots of opportunities, not just in the US, but also in Europe and in Asia. At first, I didn’t realize how extensive AAK is, with sites and offices all around the world. Maybe in the future, I can find another position at AAK.

You are studying for a master’s degree in chemical engineering, how is that?

I’m studying because I believe that with this qualification, I can find even better opportunities. I would be happy if I can find a new role in AAK because I think there are good people here. I have had a lot of support from my team. Sometimes, when I need to change my schedule due to classes, the team is always flexible and supportive.

How was it to join AAK?

When I first joined AAK I felt like the team was like a family. The director of the facility was walking around and talking to everyone. My manager was also including and friendly to me; he made an effort to make me feel comfortable and part of the team. In the quality department, everyone was very respectful and collaborative. In Iran, all my friends were Iranian. Now I have friends from all over the world- from Africa, the US, Iraq, South Korea, Canada; everywhere!

What does your future look like?

Ive started my new life here in the US and I'm really excited to continue this life. As I said, in my opinion, this is the opportunity God gave me. The journey is not over; I feel I need to really dive into this and find even better opportunities for my life.
