Our progress on sustainability

Sustainability is at the heart of our purpose Making Better Happen. Our sustainability work is embedded in all parts of the AAK value chain, from the crop all the way to the brand on the store shelf.

Key achievements during 2020 

During 2020 we have made strong progress, enabling us to make sustainability happen, from plant to brand. Below, find some of our key achievements since 2019.

Better sourcing

+92% verified deforestation-free
AAK is committed to a 100 percent sustainable palm oil supply chain by 2025; verified deforestation-free and with full respect for human rights. Verified deforestation-free improved by 92 percent to 50 percent in 2020.
+39% women enrolled in our Kolo Nafaso program
In Kolo Nafaso we source directly from women who collect and process shea kernels, now reaching more than 320,000 women. 
+31,370 trees planted
We have an ambition to plant 150,000 trees by 2025. Since 2019 we have planted more than 30,000 shea trees and more than 2,000 coconut trees.

Better Operations

-5.4% energy consumption per unit processed material
Overall, AAK’s energy consumption has decreased during 2020, due to both a reduction in processed volumes and continuous improvement projects. 
-63% water consumption per processed unit
AAK has several ongoing projects aimed at minimizing the amount of water withdrawal and water discharge at our sites.

-50% waste per processed unit
During 2020, AAK’s production sites generated less waste compared to 2019. The reduction was driven by lower volumes and improved waste management.

Better Solutions

+23% increased demand for RSPO-certified sustainable palm
At AAK, we aim to make sustainable palm oil the industrial norm through sustainable policies, public commitments and plans, as well as supplier and customer engagement. 
Supporting plant-based revolution
We drive co-development to bring new plant-based foods to market that offer great taste experiences as well as a significantly lower climate impact compared to traditional foods. 
+10% increase in revenue contributing to sustainable development
We see a great potential for the future, playing an active role in a more sustainable food system, supporting the transition to plant-based foods and growing our revenue from solutions connected to sustainable development.
